Plenergy (founded and long known as Plenoil; rebranded to Plenergy in 2024-2025) is a Spanish operator of unattended, low-cost automated petrol stations, headquartered in Madrid. Founded in 2014 by José Rodríguez de Arellano, it opened its first station in Madrid (Vallecas) and has grown into Spain's leading independent low-cost fuel retailer, with over 400 stations, ~1,200 employees, revenue above €1.55bn in 2024 and a target of 500 stations by 2027 plus expansion into Portugal and EV charging. It is not a venture-backed startup: in January 2024 private equity firms Portobello Capital and Tensile Capital Management acquired a controlling ~80% stake in a deal valued around €350-400m, with the founder retaining his role and a shareholding.
