Airway Shield

airwayshield.com ↗ ·Santander ·Seed

Airway Shield is a Santander-based medtech company that develops medical devices for managing the human airway. Its main product, the patented single-use Airway Shield mouthpiece, guides the endotracheal tube towards the trachea during intubation. It also protects the patient's teeth and oral mucosa and cuts the spread of aerosols to clinicians by up to 95%. In preclinical studies it roughly halved intubation time. The device has the CE mark, patents granted in the US and Japan, and registrations in Brazil (ANVISA) and Turkey, where it is sold through distribution agreements, and it is being commercialised in Spain. The company was founded in 2020 by intensive care physician Dr. Julio Alonso and took part in the Lanzadera accelerator. It funded itself through equity crowdfunding rounds on Capital Cell: about €400K in 2021, led by a group of investors from Santander, and €680K in 2023, led by a group from ESADE. It then opened a third round of €800K.
