Gretel came out of stealth with a $3.5M seed round from Moonshots Capital, Greylock Partners, Village Global and a group of strategic angel investors; no single lead was named. Founded in 2019 by ex-NSA, Google and AWS engineers (CEO Alex Watson), the company was building a "GitHub for data" that uses ML classification and differential privacy to hand developers anonymised, synthetic versions of production datasets. The capital had actually been closed around six months before the February 2020 announcement.
