BBuild to Zero
Build to Zero is a Seville-based climate technology company that decarbonises industrial process heat through electrification combined with long-duration thermal energy storage. Its patented ThermalBox® system converts renewable electricity into heat stored in molten salts at up to 400 °C and delivers it as steam or thermal fluid around the clock, targeting chemical, food and beverage, paper, and mining plants; the company sells the equipment alongside engineering and services, manufacturing in Spain with a European supply chain. Founded in 2022 by a team drawn from Abengoa, EDP and Isolux Corsan, it commissioned its first commercial unit at Acideka's chemical plant in Lantarón (Álava), a 2.5 MWth, 14 MWh installation paired with on-site solar that made the site the first chemical plant in Spain to fully electrify its industrial heat, and has signed a manufacturing partnership with Alfa Laval for the system's steam generator. The company raised a €2.5 million seed round in September 2023 led by Axon Partners Group with Digital Five Investment, and was awarded €2.49 million by the European Innovation Council Accelerator to industrialise and scale ThermalBox®.
