EpiDisease is a Paterna (Valencia)-based biotechnology company that develops in vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests built on epigenetic biomarkers such as DNA methylation, histone modifications and miRNAs, combined with genetics and AI-driven software. Its work focuses on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (the Scolipro blood test), sepsis and septic shock (IVD HISTSHOCK) and ageing. It was founded in 2014 as the first spin-off of CIBER-ISCIII, INCLIVA and the Universitat de València, and is based at the University of Valencia Science Park. It has received investment from Fundación Botín's Mind the Gap programme (€344,000), CDTI NEOTEC funding and a €1.9M grant for its sepsis diagnostic tool, and it won the MIT Entrepreneurship Forum Spain award for most disruptive and impactful company in 2023.
Like EpiDisease, GRAIL builds blood-based IVD tests on DNA methylation biomarkers read by machine learning (Galleri, a multi-cancer test), and it sells them to clinicians and health systems.
Freenome makes blood diagnostic tests that read cell-free DNA methylation and other multiomic biomarkers with AI, so it runs the same epigenetics-plus-AI IVD model, applied to colorectal and other cancers.
Delfi is a university spin-off (Johns Hopkins) that sells blood tests reading the chromatin-driven fragmentation patterns of cell-free DNA with machine learning, an AI-plus-epigenomic IVD model much like EpiDisease's.
Inflammatix's TriVerity blood test reads a host-response molecular signature with machine learning to diagnose acute infection and sepsis, which is the same IVD model and target market as EpiDisease's HISTSHOCK sepsis test.
Harbinger is developing a blood IVD platform that detects disease from epigenetic changes, starting with early cancer detection, which matches EpiDisease's epigenetic-biomarker diagnostics model.
