Volotea is a Spanish low-cost airline founded in 2011 by Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros (the pair behind Vueling), operating its first flight in April 2012 and specialising in direct point-to-point routes between small and mid-sized European cities that legacy and larger low-cost carriers underserve. Headquartered in Barcelona (registered office in Castrillón, Asturias), it flies a fleet of roughly 40 Airbus A319/A320 aircraft to around 80 destinations across Spain, France, Italy, Greece and other European markets, carrying 11.4 million passengers on €811m of revenue in 2024. It is a mature private-equity- and strategic-backed airline rather than an early-stage startup; in March 2026 it closed a €71m capital increase led by Aegean Airlines, which took a ~21% stake.
