SMART Fusion Energy

SMART Fusion Energy is a University of Seville deep-tech spin-off, formally constituted on 16 June 2026, that aims to design and build commercially viable compact fusion reactors. Its approach combines spherical/high-field compact tokamaks, high-temperature superconductors and negative-triangularity plasma configurations, building on the SMART (SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak) device operated by the university's Plasma Science and Fusion Technology Laboratory (PSFT) at the Ciu3A innovation centre in the Port of Seville. It launched with a €1.5M investment from deep-science fund BeAble Capital, with the University of Seville's research foundation (FIUS) also on the cap table; the underlying research team has raised over €50M in competitive international funding including four ERC grants.
