Insekt Label Biotech is a Bilbao-based biotechnology company that develops insect-based ingredients for the food, functional food and premium nutrition industries. It breeds yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) and processes them into whole mealworm flour and, through hydrolysis and fractionation, into soluble concentrates of bioactive peptides and proteins. These ingredients go into products such as breads, snacks, biscuits and meat analogues. It also sells a process by-product for soil health and plant nutrition. The company was founded in the Basque Country in 2019 and runs a pilot farm and laboratory in Zamudio, Bizkaia. In 2022 it closed a seed round of about €450,000 from Viscofan and the Mondragon cooperative group, which invested through Mondragon Promoción and its food division ERKOP.
