Microbial Biosystems

Microbial Biosystems was a Madrid-based industrial biotechnology start-up spun out of the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas Margarita Salas of Spain's National Research Council (CSIC). It developed and scaled a fermentation process that uses microbial consortia to turn organic and lignocellulosic waste into a bio-based polyester (polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHA). The polyester was meant to replace fossil-based plastics in packaging, medical implants, cosmetics and fertiliser coatings. The company was founded in early 2020 to commercialise a CSIC patent. In April 2020 it raised €165,000 from the Madrid deep-tech fund BeAble Capital. The company was dissolved in February 2022.
