MMediterranean Algae
Mediterranean Algae (legally Mediterranean Algae Technologies, S.L.) is an Alicante-based marine biotech startup that cultivates native Mediterranean macroalgae — mainly Ulva spp. (sea lettuce) — on land with proprietary tank technology, and extracts high-value bioactive compounds sold B2B as ingredients for cosmetics, nutraceuticals, food and animal health (e.g. Glycaid®). It also commercialises Bioremed Algae®, a patented algae-based biofilter that removes up to ~95% of nitrogen and phosphorus from port and coastal waters, deployed with the Port Authority of Alicante and La Savina (Formentera). Spun out of the University of Alicante Science Park, it holds an EU Seal of Excellence, won both the Ocean Bioresources and People's Choice awards at BlueInvest Awards 2026, and secured over €2M of EU/CDTI funding in January 2026 to industrialise Bioremed Algae.
