Flywire (founded as peerTransfer) is a global payments-enablement and software company that handles high-value, complex cross-border payments for education, healthcare, travel and B2B clients, combining a proprietary global payment network with vertical-specific receivables software. Started in 2009 in Valencia by MIT student Iker Marcaide after struggling to pay his own tuition from abroad, it moved its headquarters to Boston, rebranded from peerTransfer to Flywire in 2015, and in May 2021 became the first Spanish-founded startup to IPO on Nasdaq (ticker FLYW) at roughly a $3.5B valuation. It is therefore no longer a venture-stage private company; its Spanish operations are in Valencia.
